The Cube is a geometric sculptural sound installation based on the first Platonic solid and symbolically associated with the element Earth. Inside, the dark space represents an Alchemic process of Calcination, which starts with Black. This space can be physically entered through a small door, creating the experience of entering a portal leading to a difference sensory experience of Self. Light enters the form through glass beads imbedded into the work in patterns of sacred geometry.
A speaker attached to the base omit the resonant sounds of Himalayan Singing Bowls. which vibrate the sculpture, and enable people to feel calmer and more relaxed by slowing their brain waves down to an alpha or theta state of consciousness, between 4 – 12 Hz.
During the exhibition Spencer performed what he termed Metaphysical Sounds: Acts 1-5, playing Himalayan Singing Bowls from inside the Cube, and inviting audiences to engage through listening and touching the vibrating surface of the sculpture.
The Cube was the first sculpture created as an experiment for the series of work titled Nothing ‘is’ Immediate. It was commissioned and presented as part of the Bournemouth Emerging Artist Festival (BEAF2019).
